Three ways to split rent
Equally is simplest: divide the rent by the number of people. It works when rooms are similar and everyone earns about the same. By income is fairest when earnings differ: each person pays their share of the combined income. By room size charges more for the bigger bedroom. You can mix any of them with a fixed extra or discount per person.
Example: $2,400 rent, three roommates
Split equally, everyone pays $800. Split by income with $5,000, $3,000 and $4,000 take-home pay, they pay $1,000, $600 and $800, because the first person earns 41.7% of the household total. Add $100 for the person with the private bathroom and the other two share the remaining $2,300.
Splitting utilities and shared bills
Electric, gas, water and internet are usually split equally because everyone uses them. Add the monthly total in the shared bills box and choose how to split it. If a bill changes each month, use your average and settle the difference at the end of the quarter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split rent fairly between roommates?
There are three common ways: equally, by income, or by room size. Equal works when rooms are similar and incomes are close. If incomes or rooms differ a lot, split by income or room size, and add a fixed extra for perks like a private bathroom.
How do I split rent by income?
Each person pays rent × (their income ÷ everyone's combined income). With $2,400 rent and incomes of $5,000, $3,000 and $4,000, the shares are $1,000, $600 and $800. Use each person's take-home or gross income, but use the same one for everyone.
How do I split rent by room size?
Measure each bedroom in square feet and pay rent × (your room ÷ all rooms combined). Common areas like the kitchen and living room are usually shared equally, so some people split bedrooms by size and keep a fixed share for common space using the extra field.
How do I account for a private bathroom or a bigger room?
Use the extra field. Put +100 on the person with the private bathroom and the calculator takes those $100 out of the rent first, splits the rest by your method, then adds the extra back to that person. Use a negative number for a discount, such as a small room.
How should we split utilities and internet?
Most roommates split shared bills equally because everyone uses them. If you split rent by income and want bills to follow, choose 'Same way as rent' in the shared bills option.
Why do the totals end in odd cents?
A bill that does not divide evenly leaves a cent or two over. The calculator hands those cents out one at a time so everyone's share adds up to exactly the total. $1,000 split three ways is $333.34, $333.33 and $333.33.
Are my numbers saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the names you type never leave the page.
