How a biweekly pay schedule works
Biweekly pay means you are paid every two weeks, on the same weekday, usually a Friday. Fourteen days between paychecks gives 26 paydays a year. Find one payday on a recent pay stub, enter it above, and the calendar fills in the rest of the year.
The two months with three paychecks
26 paychecks across 12 months means most months have two paydays and two months have three. Those are the months where the 14-day cycle fits a third Friday. Plan for them: bills are usually set for twelve months, so the third paycheck is free to go toward savings, debt or a big expense. The calendar marks them with a star.
Biweekly vs. bi-weekly vs. semi-monthly
Biweekly means every two weeks and has no fixed dates, only a fixed weekday. Semi-monthly means twice a month on fixed dates and gives 24 paychecks. The difference matters when you budget: rent due on the 1st lands on a different paycheck from month to month with biweekly pay.
Biweekly pay for hourly and salaried workers
Salaried workers get the annual salary divided by 26, so a $52,000 salary pays $2,000.00 per paycheck before tax. Hourly workers are paid for the hours in each two-week period, so overtime is usually calculated per week and shows up on the paycheck for that period.
Frequently asked questions
How many biweekly pay periods are in a year?
26 in most years and 27 in some. The 27th paycheck happens when the first payday of the year falls on January 1 (or January 1 or 2 in a leap year).
Which months have three paychecks with biweekly pay?
It depends on your payday schedule. Enter one of your paydays above and the calendar highlights the exact months for the year.
How do I find my biweekly pay schedule?
Look at your last two pay stubs. The pay dates are 14 days apart. Enter one of them as 'one of your paydays' and the whole year is calculated.
Is biweekly the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly is every two weeks (26 paychecks). Twice a month, also called semi-monthly, is 24 paychecks on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day.
How much is each biweekly paycheck?
Divide your annual salary by 26. Enter your salary in the calculator for the gross amount before tax and deductions.
What happens when a biweekly payday is a holiday?
Employers usually pay on the business day before. The calendar handles weekends, not holidays, so check your pay stub for the final date.
Are my dates saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
