How much gravel for a driveway?
A 40 × 12 ft driveway at 6 inches deep is 240 cubic feet, about 8.9 cubic yards. With 10% waste and 10% compaction that is nearly 11 cubic yards, or about 17 US tons of crushed base.

Driveway depth and layers
Most gravel driveways use a 4 to 6 inch compacted base of crushed stone, sometimes topped with 1 to 2 inches of finer surface gravel. Soft or wet soil, or heavy vehicles, call for a deeper base and fabric underneath.
Order by the ton, not the yard
Delivery trucks carry a set weight, so suppliers price crushed stone by the ton. Crushed base with fines weighs about 1.5 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard, so a driveway needs more tons than the same volume of pea gravel.
Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need for a 100 ft driveway?
A 100 ft long, 10 ft wide driveway at 4 inches deep is 333 cubic feet, about 12.3 cubic yards, or around 20 US tons of crushed base before waste. Enter your own width and depth above.
How thick should a gravel driveway be?
Plan on 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed stone for a residential driveway. Add depth for soft ground or heavy trucks.
Do I need extra gravel for compaction?
Yes. Crushed base compacts as it is tamped or driven over, so order 10 to 15% extra, plus waste. Use the compaction box in the calculator.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a planning estimate, not an order. Bag yields, material density and waste vary by product, supplier and job, so confirm quantities with your supplier and check local building codes before you buy or pour.
