How to find the square footage of a room
Multiply length by width. A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 square feet. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, find each area and add them.
Tiles per square foot
One 12 × 12 inch tile covers 1 square foot, so you need 1 tile per square foot. A 6 × 6 inch tile covers 0.25 square feet, which is 4 tiles per square foot. An 18 × 18 inch tile covers 2.25 square feet.
Order extra for waste
Cut tiles at walls and edges cannot always be reused. Add about 10% for a straight lay and more for diagonal or herringbone. The calculator applies the right figure for the pattern you pick.
Frequently asked questions
How many tiles are in a square foot?
It depends on the tile size. Divide 144 by the tile area in square inches: a 12 × 12 tile is 1 per square foot, a 6 × 6 is 4, an 8 × 8 is 2.25 and a 4 × 4 is 9.
How do I calculate square feet from inches?
Multiply the two measurements in inches to get square inches, then divide by 144. A 24 × 36 inch space is 864 square inches, or 6 square feet.
How many square feet are in a box of tile?
It is printed on the box. A box of twelve 12 × 12 inch tiles covers 12 square feet.
