Handyman Rates: How Much Should a Handyman Charge (Hourly vs Per Job)
Updated

Handyman rates depend on where you work, what you can do and what it costs to run your business. Don’t copy a number from a website. Work out the rate you need, then compare it with what local handymen charge.
Why wage data isn’t your rate
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes pay for general maintenance and repair workers. That’s what employees earn. A self-employed handyman also pays for insurance, tools, a vehicle, self-employment tax, software and the hours spent driving and quoting that no one pays for. Your rate has to cover all of that.
Work out your hourly rate
- Decide the yearly income you want, for example $60,000. Our salary to hourly calculator converts it.
- Add yearly business costs (insurance, vehicle, tools, phone, software).
- Estimate billable hours. Most solo handymen bill only 20 to 30 hours in a 40-hour week.
- Divide: (income + costs) / billable hours.
Example: $60,000 + $15,000 costs = $75,000. At 1,200 billable hours a year, that’s $62.50 an hour. At 1,500 hours it’s $50. Those are example numbers. What matters is the method, and billable hours move the answer more than most people expect.
Hourly vs per-job pricing
| Method | Good for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | Unclear jobs, repairs, small tasks | Clients dislike open-ended totals |
| Per job | Repeat tasks you know well | You eat the loss if it runs long |
| Hourly with a cap | Medium jobs | You still need a clear scope |
Minimum charge and trip fee
A visit costs you travel, loading tools and setup. A one-hour minimum, or a 2-hour minimum for far jobs, protects you. Some handymen add a flat trip fee instead. Say it up front so it doesn’t feel like a surprise.
Don’t forget materials
Charge for materials you buy, plus a markup for the time spent buying them. See markup vs margin to set it correctly. Write each job on an estimate and bill it with a contractor invoice.
When to raise your rates
If you’re booked out two weeks or more, or you turn down jobs you didn’t want, your rate is probably too low.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a handyman charge per hour?
It varies a lot by region and by skill. Rates in big metro areas run well above rural ones. Check what two or three local handymen charge, then work out your own number from your costs, as shown below.
Is it better to charge hourly or per job?
Hourly is safer for unclear or small jobs. Per-job pricing works when you know the work well, and it rewards you for being fast. Many handymen use hourly with a minimum for small tasks and flat prices for repeat jobs.
Should I charge a minimum or trip fee?
Yes. Driving, loading and setting up take time whether the job is 20 minutes or 4 hours. A one- or two-hour minimum is common.
Why is a handyman's rate so much higher than a wage?
The rate pays for more than labor: insurance, tools, vehicle, taxes, unpaid time between jobs and profit. Government wage data for maintenance workers describes employee pay, not what a business needs to charge.
Do I need a license to be a handyman?
It depends on the state and the type of work. Many states cap the dollar size of jobs a handyman can do without a contractor license. Check your state licensing board.
