How to download a GitHub release
A repository's source code and its release assets are different things. Clicking “Download ZIP” in GitHub's Code menu downloads the repository source code — often just project files that need a developer toolchain. Release assets are files the project's maintainers uploaded to a release: installers, apps, and compiled builds ready to use.
This finder lists release assets first and keeps checksums, signatures, and source archives under “Other files” so they are never mistaken for the app itself.
Which GitHub file should I download?
Filenames vary between projects, but extensions are strong hints. These rules help — they don't guarantee compatibility:
- .exe / .msi — Windows
- .dmg / .pkg — macOS
- .apk — Android
- .AppImage / .deb / .rpm — Linux
- .zip — depends on the project; check the release notes
- arm64 / aarch64 — ARM devices (newer Macs, Raspberry Pi, many phones)
- x64 / x86_64 / amd64 — common 64-bit Intel/AMD PCs

“Download ZIP” gives you the repository source code at its current state. GitHub Releases may contain ready-to-use applications, installers, and compiled binaries provided by the maintainers. If you want to install and run software rather than read code, look in Releases first.

Where are downloads on GitHub?
On the repository page, click Releases (right sidebar), choose a release, then expand Assets. If a project has no Releases section, it doesn't publish downloads through GitHub Releases.
What are GitHub release assets?
Files a maintainer attached to a release — installers, disk images, binaries, checksums. GitHub also auto-generates “Source code” archives; those are the raw project files, usually not the app.
What is the difference between Download ZIP and GitHub Releases?
Download ZIP fetches repository source code. Releases can contain finished, ready-to-run builds. For installing software, prefer Releases.
Which file should I download from GitHub?
Match your system: .exe/.msi for Windows, .dmg/.pkg for macOS, .apk for Android, .AppImage/.deb/.rpm for Linux. When several builds exist, match the architecture too (arm64 vs x64).
