How does the overtime calculator work?
Hours up to the threshold are paid at your regular rate. Every hour above it is paid at the overtime rate you choose. A shift differential is added for the hours you enter.
Example: 45 hours at $20
40 regular hours × $20 = $800. 5 overtime hours × $30 (time and a half) = $150. Total: $950 gross for the week.
Shift differentials and overtime
Night and weekend shifts often pay a differential. Under the FLSA it raises your regular rate, so overtime is paid on the blended rate rather than your base pay alone. The calculator does this for you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Multiply your hourly rate by the overtime multiplier, usually 1.5, then by your overtime hours. At $20 an hour with 5 overtime hours, that is 5 × $30 = $150 on top of your regular pay.
What is time and a half?
Time and a half means each overtime hour is paid at 1.5 times your hourly rate. At $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour. Double time is 2 times your rate.
When do hours count as overtime?
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees usually earn overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and contracts add daily overtime, for example after 8 hours; set the threshold in the calculator to match.
How does a shift differential affect overtime?
Under the FLSA, night and weekend differentials are part of your regular rate, so your overtime rate is based on the higher blended rate, not just your base pay. This calculator includes that automatically.
