What is semi-monthly pay?
Semi-monthly pay means you are paid twice a month on fixed dates, so you get 24 paychecks a year. The most common dates are the 15th and the last day of the month, or the 1st and the 15th. Because the dates are fixed, your payday can land on any weekday, and employers usually pay on the Friday before when it falls on a weekend.
Semi-monthly vs. biweekly pay
Semi-monthly pay gives 24 equal paychecks on fixed dates. Biweekly pay gives 26 paychecks on the same weekday every two weeks. For a $60,000 salary that is $2,500.00 per semi-monthly paycheck or $2,307.69 per biweekly paycheck. The yearly total is the same, but biweekly pay has two months with three paychecks while semi-monthly pay never does.
Semi-monthly pay periods
A semi-monthly pay period usually runs from the 1st to the 15th and the 16th to the end of the month, with pay dates a few days later. Each period has a different number of days, so hourly workers see paychecks that vary slightly, while salaried workers get the same amount every time.
Semi-monthly vs. bimonthly
The words get mixed up. Semi-monthly means twice a month. Bimonthly can mean every two months, but many people use it for twice a month too. Biweekly means every two weeks. If a job posting says bimonthly, check whether you will be paid 24 or 6 times a year.
Frequently asked questions
How many paychecks are in a year with semi-monthly pay?
24. Every month has exactly two paydays, so unlike biweekly pay there are never three-paycheck months and never a 25th paycheck.
What are the typical semi-monthly pay dates?
The 15th and the last day of the month is the most common. Some employers pay on the 1st and 15th. Use the pay dates option above to switch between them.
Is semi-monthly pay the same as twice a month?
Yes. Semi-monthly and twice a month mean the same thing: two pay dates in every month, 24 per year.
Is semi-monthly better than biweekly?
Neither pays more over the year. Semi-monthly has predictable dates that suit monthly bills like rent. Biweekly has slightly smaller checks, and two months a year you get a third paycheck.
How do I calculate a semi-monthly paycheck?
Divide your annual salary by 24. Enter your salary in the calculator for the gross amount per paycheck before tax and deductions.
What if semi-monthly payday falls on a weekend?
Most employers pay on the Friday before. Tick the weekend option and the calendar moves those paydays to Friday. Your payroll policy decides, so confirm with your employer.
Are my dates saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
