What goes into tile installation cost
A tile floor costs tile, installation labor, and the supplies that go with them: thin-set mortar, grout, underlayment and trim. This calculator prices the tile you need, including waste for your layout, and adds installation labor per square foot. Add supplies and removal of the old floor from your own quotes.

How installation labor is priced
Installers usually quote labor per square foot of floor, and the rate depends on the tile size, the pattern, the condition of the subfloor and where you live. Diagonal and herringbone layouts take longer and cost more per square foot than a straight lay. Enter a quoted rate, not an average.
Ways to lower the cost
Buy the exact box count with a sensible waste allowance, choose a straight lay over diagonal or herringbone, compare box prices and ask for a labor quote that includes surface preparation. The tile and the layout drive most of the price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost of tile installation?
Multiply the floor area by the installation rate for labor, then add the tile (boxes × price per box, including waste), grout and supplies. This page does the tile, grout quantity and labor in one step.
How much tile should I buy for the floor?
Buy 10% extra for a straight lay, about 15% for diagonal and 18% for herringbone, rounded up to whole boxes. The calculator applies the pattern you choose.
Does the estimate include grout, mortar and removal?
It estimates the grout quantity, but the price shown covers tile and labor only. Thin-set mortar, underlayment, trim and removing the old floor are extra, so add them from your quotes.
Are the prices on this page real?
No. The box price and labor rate are examples so you can see how the estimate works. Replace them with prices from your supplier and installer.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a planning estimate, not an order. Bag yields, material density and waste vary by product, supplier and job, so confirm quantities with your supplier and check local building codes before you buy or pour.
Are my measurements saved?
