Septic Tank Installation Cost Calculator
A new septic tank and drain field for a 3-bedroom home costs about $3,000 to $8,000 installed (most budgets land at $5,000 to $8,000), while replacing only the tank runs about $3,000 to $7,000. Pumping a 1,000 gallon tank costs about $300 to $450. Choose install or pumping below to price your own.

How we estimate septic tank installation and pumping cost
Prices come from The Septic Guide's 2026 cost pages (installation and drain field, pumping, and inspection, updated March 2026 and checked October 2026): a 1,000 gallon tank at $800 to $1,500 (concrete), $500 to $1,200 (plastic) and $1,200 to $2,000 (fiberglass); complete systems at $3,000 to $8,000 (conventional), $5,000 to $12,000 (chamber) and $10,000 to $20,000 (aerobic and mound); tank-only replacement at $3,000 to $7,000; a perc test at $250 to $1,500; permits and inspections at $400 to $2,000; a land survey at $300 to $900; old system decommissioning at $500 to $2,000; risers at $200 to $400; and pumping from $200 to $550 by tank size. We use those figures as published.
Our own assumptions, not published figures: the pressure distribution price (we use the chamber range); tank price 20% higher at 1,250 gallons and 40% higher at 1,500; the bedroom-to-tank-size rule; the split of each system between the tank, the drain field or treatment unit and site work; site work and drain field costs 20% higher on a moderate site and 50% higher on a hard site; a design or site plan fee of $500 to $2,500; and the materials versus labor split (tank 100% materials, drain field half, site work 15%, fees and services none). The published system totals include a 1,000 gallon concrete tank, so we replace it with the tank you choose.
The typical figure is the midpoint of the low and high, not a statistical average. Prices vary widely by region and soil, and permit, perc test and design rules are set by your local health department. Figures are estimates for planning, not quotes, and we re-check the data yearly. Use a licensed septic installer.

Frequently asked questions
How much does septic tank installation cost?
The Septic Guide's 2026 pricing puts a conventional gravity system at $3,000 to $8,000 installed, with a typical all-in budget of $5,000 to $8,000 for a 3-bedroom home. Chamber systems run $5,000 to $12,000, and aerobic (ATU) and mound systems $10,000 to $20,000. The calculator adds tank size, material, site difficulty and extras to give low, typical and high totals.
How much does septic tank and drain field installation cost?
The drain field is a large part of the bill. Published drain field installation (trenching, gravel, pipe and distribution box) is $2,000 to $5,000 on its own, and a full conventional system with tank is $3,000 to $8,000. The calculator shows the drain field as its own line, so you can compare it with a tank-only replacement.
How much does septic tank replacement cost?
Replacing only the tank and reusing the existing drain field costs about $3,000 to $7,000. Replacing the complete system, tank and drain field, costs about $8,000 to $20,000. Choose "Replace the tank only" for the first case, or the full system for the second.
How big a septic tank do I need?
Tank size follows the number of bedrooms, because that sets the expected wastewater flow. We assume 1,000 gallons for up to 3 bedrooms, 1,250 gallons for 4 and 1,500 gallons for 5 or more. Your local health department sets the real minimum, so check with them.
Which septic tank material is cheapest?
For a 1,000 gallon tank the published ranges are plastic (polyethylene) $500 to $1,200, concrete $800 to $1,500 and fiberglass $1,200 to $2,000. Plastic costs least but needs careful backfilling and may not suit every site. Concrete is the most common.
How much does septic tank pumping cost?
Pumping costs $300 to $450 for a 1,000 gallon tank, $350 to $500 for 1,250 gallons and $400 to $550 for 1,500 gallons. Smaller tanks (750 gallons or less) run $200 to $350. Choose the pumping option in the calculator to add an inspection or risers.
How much does it cost to pump a septic tank that has not been pumped in years?
A tank left more than 5 years holds more sludge, so expect the visit to take longer. For tanks not pumped in 7 or more years, the published figure for the extra cleaning is $200 to $300 on top of the normal pumping price. Buried lids can add a digging fee, and risers ($200 to $400) remove it from future visits.
Do I need a perc test and permit for a septic system?
A new or replaced drain field usually needs a perc (soil) test, published at $250 to $1,500, and a permit with inspections, published at $400 to $2,000. Requirements are set by your local health department, so ask them first and use a licensed installer.
