How we estimate bathroom remodel cost
The price data comes from Fixr's "How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost" guide (updated January 27, 2026, checked October 2026): national average $12,000, typical range $6,000 to $18,000, about $120 per square foot within a $70 to $400+ range; minor $2,400–$10,000, partial $6,000–$25,000, full gut $9,000–$30,000+; tub-to-shower $1,200–$10,000; vanity $1,500–$4,500; tile work $600–$1,800.
Fixr does not publish a per-square-foot price for each scope. We split its $70 to $400 per square foot range into four bands (cosmetic $70–$130, mid-range $120–$250, full gut $180–$330, upscale $250–$400) and checked that a 50 sq ft bathroom in each band falls inside Fixr's minor, partial and full-gut dollar ranges. The bands are our estimate, not published figures.
Key items are added only where the scope does not already include them. A mid-range, full gut or upscale remodel already prices in the vanity and tile, so only the tub-to-shower conversion is added on top of those. The typical figure is the midpoint of the low and high.
Figures are national estimates for planning, not quotes. Labor and material prices change, and we re-check the data yearly.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a bathroom remodel cost?
Fixr's January 2026 guide gives a national average of about $12,000 with a typical range of $6,000 to $18,000. Minor updates start near $2,400, and a full gut renovation is $9,000 to $30,000 or more. Your own range depends on size and scope, which the estimator uses.
How much does a bathroom remodel cost per square foot?
Published figures average about $120 per square foot, with a range from $70 to $400 or more. Small bathrooms cost more per square foot because fixtures, plumbing and labor do not shrink with the room.
How much does it cost to convert a tub to a shower?
Fixr lists $1,200 to $10,000 in total, including $200 to $1,000 to remove the tub and $1,000 to $9,000 for the conversion. A prefab shower insert sits at the low end and a custom tiled walk-in shower at the high end.
What makes a bathroom remodel more expensive?
Moving plumbing fixtures, custom tile, a larger shower, structural or water damage found behind walls, and permits in some areas. Keeping the toilet, tub and sink where they are is the biggest saving.
Which scope should I pick?
Cosmetic: paint, fixtures, mirror and hardware. Mid-range: new vanity, flooring and tub or shower surround. Full gut: down to the studs with new plumbing and waterproofing. Upscale: custom tile, frameless glass and premium fixtures.
Is this a quote?
No. These are national published ranges and a simple split into four scope levels. A contractor needs to see the room. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere unless you use the quote request form below.
