How the time card calculator works
For each day, the calculator takes the time between clock-in and clock-out and subtracts your unpaid lunch. The days add up to your weekly hours. Add an hourly rate to see overtime and gross pay too.
Example: a week with lunch breaks
Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 60-minute lunch is 9 hours a day, 45 hours a week. At $20 an hour: 40 × $20 + 5 × $30 overtime = $950 gross.
Hours and minutes vs. decimal hours
8:20 means 8 hours 20 minutes, which is 8.33 decimal hours. Payroll multiplies your rate by decimal hours, so the calculator shows both.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
For each day, subtract your clock-in time from your clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid lunch. 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours. Add the days together for your weekly total.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 8 hours 20 minutes is 8 + 20/60 = 8.33 hours. Payroll usually uses decimal hours, so the calculator shows both formats.
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is counted into the next day. 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours, which is how 3rd shift work hours are usually recorded.
When do I get overtime on my time card?
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, like California, also have daily overtime after 8 hours.
Are my times saved?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
