How much does a concrete driveway cost?

Published 2026 cost guides generally put an installed concrete driveway at about $6 to $12 per square foot for a 4 to 6 inch slab with a standard broom finish, with stamped, colored or heavily reinforced work running higher. A single-lane driveway 12 ft wide and 40 ft long (480 sq ft) is therefore about $2,880 to $5,760 installed. A two-car driveway of 20 × 20 ft (400 sq ft) is about $2,400 to $4,800. The concrete is only part of that: forms, base, labor, finishing, control joints and removal of an old driveway make up the rest.

Concrete slab on a gravel base

Thickness: 4, 5 or 6 inches

Four inches is common for cars only. Five or six inches is used for heavier vehicles, trucks and weak soil. Going from 4 to 5 inches adds 25% to the concrete, and 6 inches adds 50%, so thickness changes the material bill noticeably. The example below uses 5 inches. Check your local code and ask your contractor what the base and soil need.

What changes the price of a driveway

Size, thickness, steel reinforcement (mesh or rebar), the gravel base, slope and drainage, how much old pavement has to be broken out and hauled away, the finish, whether a pump is needed because the truck cannot reach, and local labor rates. Delivery and minimum-load fees also add up on small pours.

Material cost: a worked example

A 40 × 12 ft driveway at 5 inches with 10% waste needs about 8.15 cubic yards. At $160 per cubic yard of ready-mix the concrete is about $1,300. Bags are not realistic at this size: about 367 bags of 80 lb, around $2,570 at $7 each. Ready-mix is the normal choice for a driveway.

Hiring a pro

A driveway is a poured-in-one-day job with a short window once the truck arrives, so most people hire it out. How much does a 2-car concrete driveway cost?

Is a concrete driveway cheaper than asphalt?

Concrete usually costs more up front than asphalt but needs less maintenance and lasts longer. Compare local quotes for both, since prices differ by region.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a planning estimate, not an order. Bag yields, material density and waste vary by product, supplier and job, so confirm quantities with your supplier and check local building codes before you buy or pour.
